Rest In Power, Tina

One of my favorite portraits of the Queen of Rock & Roll (with all due respect to Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin) Tina Turner, captured by the late, legendary photographer Herb Ritts. The life she had led. Rest in eternal peace and power to a legend, survivor, inspiration, and icon in the truest sense.

“If you are unhappy with anything…whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it. Because you’ll find that when you’re free, your true creativity, your true self, comes out.” –Turner to Ebony magazine, November 1986

Saturday Night

How am I spending this Saturday evening? Not getting ready to hit the clubs or check out the latest major flick at the movie theater–if it was the mid-2000s, yes to both. Rather, I’m chillaxing to some 80s Madonna (I just watched Who’s That Girl and she was fab in it) while I sip Yogi’s Bedtime tea (the teabag quote is a new one to me) and my apartment fills with the heady tobacco-vanilla aroma from the candle I currently have lit. That candle, which I’ve lit for the past five nights, is superb in throw, by the way. Since it’s also Black History Month, if you’re looking for one way to do some good during BHM, go support the black-owned The 125 Collection and buy their candles! I know I’ll be making another order!

Now Playing (1.14.23)

I need some comfort amidst all the rain we’re having and PMS creeping up on me. Enter some mid-90s chill-out soul to soothe me on this Saturday/Sunday night…

(Side note: I’m aware of how problematic Erykah has been recently. :-/ )

Happy 30th anniversary to this jam!

And, since it’s still pouring out there…

(I haven’t seen this video in eons and forgot that part where it snows. Whaaaat.)

If there’s one thing I can be grateful for, it’s growing up during a time when songs like these were mainstream. Growing up in the 90s was a mixed bag for me personally, although I can definitely acknowledge it was a golden time for pop culture, fashion, and entertainment. Songs (and music videos) like these prove the latter, and they (along with many other songs) helped me escape from whatever shit I was going through then. It wasn’t all party & sex songs; there was emotion and true soul, honey. It’s easy to lament over the absence of music like this in today’s landscape, but you know what’s easier? Putting on Mary’s “My Life” album while shutting out all the cacophony from today, and just chillin’ to it.
